Back in the 1800's, a man by the name of Jarvis J. Green left his home in Michigan and came to Texas.  Jarvis, a very successful businessman from Pontiac, Michigan, settled in this area and wanted to name it "Pontiac".  The US Post Office denied that name, at which time Green proposed the name "Saginaw".  That name was accepted, and is still in use today.  The name Saginaw was important to Green, who lived at No. 191 North Saginaw Street, and had a mercantile business located at No. 30 North Saginaw Street while in Pontiac.  Saginaw, an Indian name meaning "to flow out", remains the name of our city.
